I created Half Dome Hike 101 because of my own experience hiking Half Dome — and because I truly wished I had a guide like this the first time around.
As a personal trainer of over 20 years and triathlete I hiked it at 45 in excellent endurance shape. I could go for miles, no problem. But what I hadn’t done was targeted strength training for the long, relentless uphill and quad-burning downhill — or for the cable section that absolutely requires upper body strength. I made it, but let’s just say… it was a humbling experience.
When I returned at 50, I approached it differently (and perhaps more “German” 😉). I trained strategically — building leg strength for the sustained climb and descent, back strength to carry the back pack for 12 ish hours and upper body strength to confidently pull myself up the cables. The difference was night and day. I felt strong, prepared, and in control.
But beyond the fitness piece, I realized how much there is to organize and think about: permits, where to stay, what to pack (and what not to pack!), what to wear, how to fuel properly, timing, trail details, pacing, and what to realistically expect on hike day. There are so many moving parts — and as someone who loves organization, I thought: Why didn’t I have a structured, step-by-step guide for this?
So I created one.
